Ben and Amanda came with me to the hospital today to meet Le Men. I thought meeting him would help them understand why so much of my energy is directed toward these children. The ayi’s face lit up when she saw us. We’d brought her a fast-food lunch—always guaranteed to win favor. After she’d left the room, clutching her bucket of chicken in satisfaction, I stripped Le Men, rubbed him down with baby lotion, and dressed him in his new shirt. He smelled lovely and basked in the attention.

When she returned, the ayi reported that the milk we’d brought Le Men on Friday was “too good.” Is that as compared with the milk from the orphanage that is “too bad”? She had quit feeding it to him because it caused him to have diarrhea. He is marginally better than he was on Friday, but it’s difficult to tell. And there’s no new information on a surgery date—only that it will happen when they think he is strong enough.

It’s interesting to see how babies are so attracted to other kids. Le Men was mesmerized by Amanda and was pleased with the toys. According to the ayi, he wasn’t sleeping well at night and she’s had to stand and hold him for hours. She looks exhausted—she’s been with him almost nonstop since Wednesday, but he couldn’t get better care from anyone else—she is struggling to do her best.
